Understanding Sensory Seeking vs. Sensory Avoiding

Understanding Sensory Seeking vs. Sensory Avoiding

Two Sides of Sensory Processing

Kids with sensory processing differences generally fall into two categories — though many kids show traits of both!

Sensory Seekers

These kids crave sensory input. They might:

  • Touch everything
  • Love rough play
  • Seek out loud noises or strong flavors
  • Have trouble sitting still

Sensory Avoiders

These kids are overwhelmed by sensory input. They might:

  • Cover their ears in loud environments
  • Be picky eaters (texture-related)
  • Avoid messy play
  • Get upset by certain clothing textures

Understanding where your child falls on this spectrum helps you choose the right tools and strategies to support them.
